Water splashed over the edge of the tub. The warmth had been a refuge for the last twenty minutes, relaxing Haru, helping them pretend they hadn’t arrived in the Honeymoon Suite overlooking Sapphire Lake with Tally. But they couldn’t hide forever. Tally would be out there, waiting, until he thought Haru had ottered out then he’d probably come in.

Haru sighed.

Tonight had to be on Haru’s own terms. They’d prepared properly. Hoped they had. Otters tended to be a bit aggressive in bed. The thought of the next morning turned Haru’s stomach. Instead of psyching themself up for what was supposed to happen next, Haru had been daydreaming of playing in the lake. A swim would be nice.

No. No. Not the time.

Right. Fucking. Urusar Akaike expected their scents to be thoroughly mingled in the morning. For Haru to be debauched.

If Haru could separate how they felt about their position from Tally, it might make the next step easier.

It wasn’t as if Tally were ugly, quite the opposite. Handsome. Gorgeous smile. Big. Maybe big everywhere? There could be fun to be had, being exposed to all that raw strength—if Haru kept it to fucking. Pleasing their new Argaze didn’t have to be a hardship. Hopefully Tally was a considerate lover. That would make servicing him easier.

Now or never. Out of the tub.

Water dripped from Haru as they wrapped the towel around themself. Obviously they’d missed a spot, but they felt too nervous to recheck. They nearly walked into the door because they didn’t turn the knob, and they stopped short when they re-entered the suite.

“What is all this?”

“You like it?”

Candles lit the room. Warm, orange glows softening even the hard edge of the giant snake. Flowers covered almost every available surface but the bed. Haru was almost disappointed there weren’t rose petals on the comforter.

“Too much?” Was Tally nervous? He kept shifting on the bed, making it creak.

“No, it is…sweet.”

A nice gesture. Tally was trying. He didn’t have to create a mood. Haru should appreciate that.

“And unexpected.” Also true.

“Good, good. I didn’t want it to be too, um, eager.”

Tally stood and joined Haru, enveloping them in an embrace. Strong. Warm. Most people would enjoy such a feeling. Haru could enjoy the physicality—being close to someone. Tally’s nose pressed against Haru’s temple, a breath went out and in, and maybe even a little tongue-flick. Haru shuddered, unable to keep the small bit of fear away.

The embrace tightened for a second. Great, strangled on their wedding night. Haru laughed, and was quickly joined by Tally, who took a step back. His hands didn’t leave Haru, though, still caging them in.

“We really haven’t had this kind of time alone, have we?”

“No.”

Tally smiled. “Argaze and Satislit, alone at last. It’s been so frustrating not being able to spend time with you.”

Haru dipped their head, hoping they wouldn’t be made to answer.

“Come on. I’ve got something for you.” Tally tugged Haru over to the bed. “You disappeared into the bath so quick… I thought this might help.
